National Certificate (Vocational):

NATED / Report 191 programmes are delivered under the auspices of the Department of Higher Education and Training and quality assured by Umalusi. The programmes consist of 18 months of theoretical studies at Colleges and 18 months of relevant practical application in workplaces. Engineering studies range from N1 – N6 while Business and Utility Studies range from N4 – N6:

  • Electrical Engineering N1-N6
  • Civil Engineering: Plumbing N1-N3
  • Multi-Disciplinary Draughting Office Practice (MDDOP) N4-N6
  • Engineering & Related Design N1-N6

Duration

  • 1 Year for N1 – N3 Engineering Studies   1 Year for N4 – N6 Engineering Studies 3 Years (18 months theoretical studies + 18 months workplace application) for N4 – N6 Business and Utility Studies

  • National N Diploma

What is an apprenticeship?

  • Apprenticeships combine theory, practical work and workplace practice in a chosen trade field and in the case of a listed trade ends in a trade test and an artisan certificate of competence.
  • In South Africa, apprenticeships are monitored by the QCTO. The National Artisan Moderation Body (NAMB) oversees the quality assurance of apprenticeships on behalf of the QCTO.
  • NAMB is responsible for moderating trade tests, developing and managing a national database of registered artisan trade assessors and moderators, recording artisan achievements and recommending the certification of artisans to the QCTO.
