Admission Requirements: Southern Union State Community College Admission
Shelton State Community College is an open admission institution. The College offers a lot of courses that will enable students to successful in any career path they choose. All students who have earned a high school diploma or GED are eligible for admission. Any applicant without a high school diploma or GED is encouraged to contact the Adult Education Department by emailing GED@sheltonstate.edu.
All students must complete the online application for admission, submit the residency signature page, and submit a valid photo ID. Applicants may submit the documentation in person to Enrollment Services or by mail or email. All mailed and emailed copies must be clear and fully legible. All requested information on the application must be provided. Applications will not be processed until all parts of the application are received; application information, signature page, and photo ID.

Shelton State Community College Application Requirements for Admission 2025-2026
The following are the documents that are required during your application process:
- High school graduates who have never attended college should request that the high school send an official transcript, with a graduation date posted directly to Enrollment Services, Box 190, Shelton State Community College, 9500 Old Greensboro Road, Tuscaloosa, AL 35405. Transcripts should only be sent after the student officially graduates from high school. Click the following link for admission requirements for first-time college students.
- Applicants who hold the General Educational Development (GED) must have an official GED transcript sent directly to Enrollment Services from the test site or the Alabama State Department of Education. Click the following link for admission requirements for first-time college students.
- Applicants who have not completed high school or earned a GED are not eligible for admission to credit courses at Shelton State. Please contact our adult education department by clicking here.
- Students who transfer from another college must request official transcripts from each previous college in addition to providing a final high school transcript or GED certificate. Applicants who have completed a baccalaureate degree or higher and do not plan to pursue a degree at Shelton State, are only required to submit an official transcript from the institution granting the highest degree. How to Apply – Shelton State Community College Application for Admission 2025-2026
Shelton State Community College is a public institution with open admissions. Admission is open to all students who have achieved a high school diploma or a GED. Applicants who do not have a high school diploma or a GED should contact the Adult Education Department at GED@sheltonstate.edu. A first-time freshman is a student who has never attended college before after graduating from high school or earning a GED. After graduating from high school, dual enrollment students will be considered first-time freshmen and must complete a first-time freshman application:
- Apply for Shelton State University online.
- Fill out the Signature/Residency page and submit it.
- By mail or email, send an unexpired government-issued photo ID.
- Submit a copy of your official high school or GED transcript as proof of graduation.
- If you attended college as a dual enrollment student before graduating from high school, you must submit an official college transcript.

Transfer Students
A transfer student is a student who has already attended another institution or university before enrolling at Shelton State.
- Apply for Shelton State University online.
- Fill out the Signature/Residency page and submit it.
- By mail or email, send an unexpired government-issued photo ID.
- Official college transcripts from all previous colleges should be submitted.
- Submit a copy of your official high school or GED transcript as proof of graduation.
Transient Student
A transitory student is a student who is enrolled at one college but attending classes at another that will credit toward their degree at their home college.
- Apply for Shelton State University online.
- Fill out the Signature/Residency page and submit it.
- By mail or email, send an unexpired government-issued photo ID.
- Send a transitory letter with a list of specifically permitted courses for the term.
