Steps To Apply: Federal Student Aid for 2025-2026

Federal Student Aid is regulated by the American government.  A Department within the government is responsible for providing financial assistance to students who enroll in public universities and colleges in the form of grants, loans, and work-study funds.  It is known as the largest financial aid body in the US.

Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form allows you to be considered for federal student aid. In addition, states and colleges use FAFSA information to award their own grants, scholarships, and loans. But, since aid is limited, you have to meet the deadlines.

Each college may have its own closing date. Check with the college(s) you’re interested in attending. You may also want to ask your college about its definition of an application closing date.

  • Apply for admission at the University of South Alabama (USA). Students must be accepted before aid eligibility can be determined.
  • Create a Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID) username and password at https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htm. FSA IDs are used for electronic signatures. Parents of dependent students must also create an FSA ID.
  • For more information regarding the criteria, the Department of Education uses to determine if a student is considered to be dependent, visit https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa/filling-out/dependency.
  1. Complete and Submit the FAFSA Online:
  • Complete the FAFSA at https://fafsa.gov or by using the myStudentAid app for iOS and Android. The FAFSA is available every October 1 so apply early!
  • Avoid common errors by verifying personal information is entered correctly (name, date of birth, and social security number).

  • Once the FAFSA has been received by the USA, students will be notified through their JagMail account (if accepted for admission), or the email address listed on the FAFSA.
  • Students should continue to check for emails and their PAWS account on a regular basis for any additional requests for documents.
  • Approximately 30% of all applicants are selected for verification by the Department of Education and additional documentation may be required before an aid offer can be processed.
  1. Finalize Aid Offers:

Aid Offer notifications will be sent to the student’s JagMail account. Students can also check the status of their aid offers at any time in PAWS.

Accept/decline any aid offers in PAWS.

If a student accepts Federal Direct Student Loans, they must complete loan requirements such as a Master Promissory Note (MPN) and Loan Entrance Counseling at https://studentaid.gov using their FSA ID. Outstanding loan requirements will be listed in PAWS.

When Must A Student Begin Repaying Of Federal Student Aid

Once you graduate, drop below half-time enrollment, or leave school, your federal student loan goes into repayment. However, if you have a Direct Subsidized, Direct Unsubsidized, or Federal Family Education Loan, you have a six-month grace period before you are required to start making regular payments.

You’ll have a nine-month grace period if you’ve got a Perkins Loan. (Got a PLUS loan? You’ll go into repayment as soon as the loan is fully disbursed, which means once it’s paid out. But if you’re a graduate and professional student PLUS borrower, you will be placed on an automatic deferment while in school and for six months after graduating, leaving school, or dropping below half-time enrollment.)

Note:

If you listed a school on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form and have been offered admission by that school, the financial aid office at the school will send you an aid offer (often electronically). The offer includes the types and amounts of financial aid you may receive from federal, state, private, and school sources. For more details and information, visit the Official Website Of the Federal Student Aid.
