NSFAS provides financial assistance to academically deserving students who are in need. The bursaries for FET College students will only be offered to students enrolled for NC (V) and Report 191 (Nated) Programs. It covers tuition fee, accommodation and transport.

National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a state entity which provides financial aid scheme to the needy students to help pay for the cost of their tertiary education after finishing high school. It is funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training.

National Student Financial Aid Scheme was established in 1996, replacing the Tertiary Education Fund of South Africa (TEFSA) in 1999. The TEFSA program was a non-profit company which managed and administered NSFAS since its establishment until 2000. In 1999, TEFSA was converted into a statutory body called NSFAS.

NSFAS bursaries is “loans” given to students which needed to be paid back. The loan repayment began once the student had found employment and was earning R80, 000 or more annually.


In order to be a qualified NSFAS Applicant;

  1. Be a South African citizen.
  2. You need to be enrolled or intending to enroll for the NC(V) programs at any of the 50 public FET colleges in South Africa.
  3. Be in need of financial assistance.
  4. Be able to demonstrate potential for academic success.


To apply for the NSFAS bursary, the following documents are needed for NSFAS Application;

  • Identity Document/Birth Certificate
  • Latest Academic Results
  • Proof of parent’s income (If parent/s employed)
  • Death Certificate/s (If parent/s deceased)
  • Doctor’s Certificate (If permanently disabled)
