The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is a government-run national agency that was established in April 2005 to administer social benefits on behalf of the Department of Social Development. The DSD supervises the Agency but has no operational authority over it.
It was also created to move the responsibility for social security from the provinces to the national government, with reports to the Department of Social Development (DSD). Abraham Mahlangu is the company’s current chief executive officer.
According to Schedule 3A of the Public Finance Management Act, SASSA is a public entity. In 1937, the first Department was founded to control and subsidize existing private, non-government social programs while also offering certain extra services.
South Africa has inherited social welfare programs that were “not deemed to be essential social investment objectives and were under-resourced,” according to the 1997 White Paper on Social Welfare. The Department “seeks to improve the lives of the poor, vulnerable, and excluded members of society.” Its mission is to alleviate poverty, promote social integration, and create conditions for long-term livelihoods.
