The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a financial aid policy for students from the South Africa to offers financial support to deprived undergraduate learners to help cover the expense of their tertiary education. This Scheme is funded by the Higher Education and Training Agency. In 1996, the National Student Financial Aid Program was established, replacing the Terrestrial Scheme.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme was introduced in 1996, succeeding the South African Tertiary Education Fund (TEFSA) in 1999. The scheme also manages grants from the Sector Education and Training Authorities, such as the Funza Lushaka Teacher Bursary (for students seeking teaching qualifications), DHET Impairment Bursary and other grants (SETAs).

NSFAS covers the following;

For “full time” students, tuition fees, lodging and food and transport allowances, and just tuition fees for “part time” students.

You need the following to complete your NSFAS application:

  • 4 valid copies of student Identity Document
  • 2 valid copies of parent’s / guardian’s ID or death certificates
  • 1 valid copy of ID/ Birth Certificate for each dependent in the house
  • 1 valid copy of parents / guardian’s latest pay slip, grant slip or affidavit as proof of income
  • 1 valid copy of highest qualification
  • 1 Proof of residence
  • Application or motivational letter written by an applicant applying for a bursary

You can apply online using a cellphone, tablet or computer. Follow these simple steps to apply:

Step 1: Go to and click on the ‘myNSFAS’ tab

Step 2: Create a myNSFAS account

Step 3: Click on the ‘APPLY’ tab and answer the questions on the screen

Step 4: Upload the required supporting documents then click on ‘submit’
