All You Need To Know: ISTC Application for Admission 2025-2026
Join a community of innovative individuals and access unique resources. ISTC has been fully accredited by the Council on Occupational Education for over 40 years and is part of the Alabama Community College System. ISTC has 543 students enrolled as of the Fall 2010 semester, all of whom are jailed, adults. In the mid-1960s, the Alabama government founded the College with the sole objective of offering career training to jailed students. ISTC’s mission is to connect, measure and enrich the Illinois innovation economy.
For more than 50 years, the professors and staff have worked tirelessly to meet that goal, ensuring that students are well-prepared to return to their families, communities, and workplaces. ISTC is now assisting Alabama in closing the job gap by providing technical training in 17 career categories, adult education and GED preparation, and soft skills training vital for today’s workplace success. Our graduates are employed across the state, in both major and small enterprises, thanks to the skills they learned at ISTC.

Adult Education is the initial step on the road to success for many ISTC students. Adult Education is committed to meeting students where they are and delivering personalized learning in a supportive, professional setting. Students can prepare for the GED or receive a diploma from their hometown high school through Alabama’s Alternative High School Diploma program, in addition to fundamental literacy skills.
Students can choose from small group learning, specialized teaching, or working one-on-one with experienced peer tutors under the leadership of Adult Education teachers. Students can study for the GED exam in fully equipped classrooms, and Pearson Vue’s computerized testing facilities allow rapid access to exam results.
The Career Pathways program is for students who want to pursue career technical education while receiving a GED or high school diploma. Students in the Career Pathways program enrol in college courses while attending standard Adult Education classes; working toward several goals keeps students motivated and increases their chances of success.
Adult Education classes are available in the Tutwiler instructional service centre, inside the Donaldson, Draper, and Elmore correctional facilities, as well as at Red Eagle Work Center and the

- Career Technical Education
ISTC offers 17 career technical programs ranging from Auto Body Repair to Welding to students. All programs offer short-term stackable certificates that can be combined to acquire an Alabama Community College System institution’s typical “long certificate.” Many programs provide industry certification or credentialing to qualifying participants at no cost.
ISTC’s career tech instructors have a wealth of knowledge and expertise to share in the classroom. Their close ties to business and industry ensure that course content is current and relevant. Students are encouraged to hone their skills through “real work” projects in classrooms and labs that are built and equipped to reflect today’s industry.
Career technical programs are offered at the ISTC main campus, Draper and Tutwiler instructional service centres, inside Donaldson correctional facility and include:
