TVET Colleges Under Government

South Africa is home to fifty (50) government-registered and accredited TVET Colleges, operating across approximately 364 campuses situated in both rural and urban locations. These public Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions are established and regulated under the Continuing Education and Training Act 16 of 2006 and function under the oversight of the Department of Higher Education and Training. Their mission is to provide practical, skills-based education that prepares students for a wide variety of career paths. These government-run TVET Colleges are crucial to the country’s education landscape, aiming to equip learners with relevant, hands-on skills that meet the evolving needs of the labour market.

To achieve this, they maintain strong partnerships with key industry stakeholders, including businesses, trade organizations, and commercial enterprises. These collaborations ensure that the courses offered remain current, practical, and aligned with the demands of today’s workplaces. In addition to technical expertise, TVET Colleges emphasize entrepreneurial skills, giving students the tools they need to launch and manage successful businesses. Programs span diverse fields such as catering, construction, information technology, tourism, and hairdressing.

This blend of practical skills and entrepreneurship fosters independence and adaptability among graduates, positioning them well for dynamic career opportunities or self-employment. Funded and managed by government bodies responsible for education and skills development, these institutions offer accessible and affordable training opportunities for many South Africans. Their focus is not only on knowledge acquisition but also on ensuring students can immediately apply what they learn in real-world settings. This focus on practical learning helps address skills shortages in various sectors, supporting broader economic growth and development.
