The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is a government-run national agency that was established in April 2005 to administer social benefits on behalf of the Department of Social Development.

The DSD supervises the Agency but has no operational authority over it.

It was also created to move the responsibility for social security from the provinces to the national government, with reports to the Department of Social Development (DSD).

Abraham Mahlungu is the company’s current chief executive officer.

According to Schedule 3A of the Public Finance Management Act, SASSA is a public entity.

The first Department was established in 1937 to oversee and fund existing private, non-government social organizations while also providing additional services.

According to the 1997 White Paper on Social Welfare, South Africa inherited social welfare programs that were “not judged to be critical social investment objectives and were under-resourced.”

“The Department works to enhance the lives of the poor, vulnerable, and excluded elements of society,” according to its mission statement.

Its goal is to reduce poverty, improve social integration, and offer long-term livelihood opportunities.
